The Problem with Humanity…

WILL and DESIRE.  It is a human component that can’t be ignored.  When you have a laser focus on what you WANT and are WILLING to fight for it, sweat for it, (proverbially) die for it…You WILL WIN!  Promise.

So, in these times, we all know about emotional disorders/mental illness. Listen, these “issues” are part of being a human being.  You are not born with emotional disorders/mental illness.  You create bad emotional habits that can become mental illness…based on what you are unwilling to accept.  This is caused by cultural and generational norms and values that don’t work in today’s world. Essentially, we as the human race do not like to deal with conflict.  Irish people learn to avoid conflict….Italians learn to fight about it!  😉

Where the “rubber meets the road” is what you’re going to do in the moment.  How are you going to deal with the conflict long-term?  Are you willing to let it go?  Are you willing to fight for the sake of the relationship…instead of doing what works just for you? Are you going to give up and give in?  Are you going to choke under pressure?  ARE YOU GOING TO QUIT??!

Whatever goal you are trying to reach….good grades, losing weight, saving your relationship, getting a job…..DON’T QUIT.

The United States Has Become a Welfare Nation…

Trauma is part of everyone’s yesterday. When I hear someone from social services say, “You don’t understand, their life was horrible….or…They came from a dysfunctional family.”

… I feel like screaming!  These type of professionals hold someone in a mode of “perseverating” over their problems in life…and never teach them how to find acceptance for what they can’t change.  They end up pitying the person and creating a co-dependency to the system.  They don’t teach the client how to be tolerant in their relationships or how to value different personalities….so that the client can develop long term, sustainable relationships. Or, even if the relationship is physically non-existent, the client does not learn how to emotionally let go and move on.  As a result, holding down a job becomes impossible!!

The therapeutic model  has 6 stages – Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance, Relapse.

With proper use of this model, I believe every individual is capable of reaching  – Action/Maintenance stage of change…with minimal reasons to go back to the Relapse stage.  The professional needs to teach them REBT techniques so that they can learn how to manage their emotions, dispute their irrational thinking, and go on to live a fulfilling life!

We Must Be Greater Than What We Suffer…

…From The Amazing Spiderman 2…quoted from 1:05 into the clip

“There will be dark days ahead of us too…
There will be days when you feel all alone
And that’s when HOPE is needed most
No matter how buried it gets
Or how lost you feel
YOU MUST PROMISE ME
That you will hold on to HOPE
Keep it alive
We must be greater than what we suffer
My wish for you is to become HOPE
People need that
And even if you fail
What better way is there for you to live
As we look around here today
At all of the people who helped make us who we are
I know it feels like we’re saying goodbye
But we will carry a piece of each other
into everything that we do next
To remind us of who we are
And of who we’re meant to be”….

7 Habits of Chronically Unhappy People…

It’s January 1 of 2015.  The first day of a new year to think differently about yourself, others and life.  There’s a lot of poetic sayings on billboards, posters and in coffee table books that sound great!  They give us fleeting inspirational, fuzzy, warm feelings.  But before you know it, the realities of life rear its ugly head and – POOF!  The feelings are gone.  We’re left right back where we started –  growing more unhappy and unaccepting of the un-pleasantries in life…..slowly emotional disorder takes over and impacts all of our relationships.  Being happy for the long haul in life becomes more difficult.

You can keep reading all the self-help books out there you want – there’s a lot of good ones…  You can keep seeking out all the “professionals” too – Therapists, Personal Trainers, Coaches and the like…(some are good).  But most of them are only teaching you behavioral techniques – “Do this, don’t do that”…..and usually their EGO gets in the way of helping you learn how to change your life without their services.

To truly develop as a human being, you must develop your spirituality.  This is trickier than you think because organized religion (the necessary organizational structure for spirituality) is naturally flawed because it’s taught by flawed human beings.  (So there in lies the idea of forgiveness!)

Have I lost you yet?  Don’t stop reading….

Until you truly understand that your attitude in life is driven by your belief system …getting all the advice from others will only give you short term results…

Having a discipline of spirit, mind and body will allow you to make more conscious and intentional behavioral choices in life…I mean, who the heck wakes up and chooses to be anxious or angry??!

So, while your working with your trainer to develop a disciplined approach for the fit body you’ve always wanted…and while you’re working with your nutritionist to develop a disciplined approach to eating healthier…

REMEMBER:  You have to develop a disciplined, spiritual approach to having a balanced, accepting life in order to be a happy person.  Exercise, but don’t become a work-out-aholic.  Eat healthier, but don’t become obsessed (orthorexia nervosa).  Eat a twinkie once and awhile – it’s good for the soul.  Oh, and by the way going to church every Sunday isn’t necessarily going to cut it either.

Diabetes – The Silent Killer

We’re a human race that seeks an exact answer for how to live a long life.  Our ancestors worked their tails off to build this country and didn’t have time to care about their overall health.  There were a variety of coping skill “outlets” that are now considered “No-No’s”.

Primarily – Food, alcohol and smoking!

Well folks, it’s about balance, not control …(not that I would endorse picking up the habit of smoking!)  While Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, there’s another trending problem happening in America, primarily in affluent areas.  Orthorexia nervosa.

Listen, you need to have discipline of spirit, mind and body….with flexibility!

Relax about life.  If you’re overweight – take ownership and get help to get back your health.  Don’t worry about the size 2 jeans.

If you’re becoming paralyzed in the grocery store about buying “healthy” food – chill. Get educated, but don’t become a social outcast or lose your ability to eat of variety of foods.  You will become a big bucket of “NO F-U-N!”

So back to diabetes…

“So how can our health care system ensure diabetes is caught, as well as treated? The first step: Increasing the emphasis on primary care, so patients regularly see doctors who monitor their weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and vital signs, while also assessing their family history. “Chronic diseases are not controlled by episodic care,” said del Rio. “You need to have somebody that monitors you regularly.”

Tim Tebow – I Think He’s Getting Some Thumbs Up!

“I don’t understand why it is such a big deal for TT to express his faith. I am not a religious person but respect what he does. We have so many crack head nasty actors out there that we worship but a nice clean cut, grounded person like him we rake over the coals in jest. America we have our priorities screwed up!”

– A response from a reader

Whether you believe in God or not…or whether you believe he was a good enough football player…

Tim Tebow’s a good guy!

Do You Have an Unhealthy Relationship With Technology?

This is my response from a conversation that started amongst Mom’s.

Read the attachment…it’s food for thought!

“I have 3 boys – 17, 15, and 12. I will admit, that what I’ve allowed to be part of my third child’s social world, in terms of technology, is significantly different than what I allowed with my first…and I think I’m still pretty conservative comparatively. I don’t know where the exact line exists. Choosing to hold true some values that you believe in, that don’t match what society tells you to be true…will cause you to become an outlier on some level. This is hard – because who doesn’t want to belong? But then again….you can’t just follow the crowd… Thanks again for sharing the video. I think we’re going to apply some of the suggestions to our family life….it certainly can’t hurt!”
